Dr. Pococke

Dr. Edward Pocockc, the celebrated Orientalist, always -avoided in his sermons the least show or ostentation of learning. His care not to amuse his hearers with things which they could not understand, gave some of them occasion to entertain a very contemptible opinion of his learning, and to speak of him accordingly. One of his Oxford friends travelling through Childry, enquired, for amusement, who was their minister, and how they liked him. He was answered, "Our parson is one Mr. Pococke, a plain honest man; but, master, he is no Latiner."
